International Widows Day 2024: Honoring Resilience and Advocating for Justice
Published on

On June 23rd, 2024, TERIA Founder Kohanya Linet, alongside her spouse Hon. Otiende Amollo and other distinguished leaders, gathered in Kaloleni, Kilifi County, to mark International Widows Day. Themed “Respect, Dignity, and Justice for Widows,” the event served as both a celebration and a call to action for widows across Kenya and beyond.
A Powerful Gathering The gathering was organized and hosted by the Cometogether Widows and Orphans Organization, led by **CEO Ms. Diana Kamande**. The event brought together influential voices and advocates including **Former Cabinet Secretary Aisha Jumwa, Faith Alube, Kenya Land Alliance, Ms. Janet Ngombalu (Country Director, Christian Aid Kenya), Dr. Margaret Kurungaru (Commissioner, NGEC), the FIDA Kenya team**, and many others.
A Call for Justice Throughout the day, powerful testimonies and speeches emphasized that widows deserve more than just sympathy—they deserve recognition, protection, and equal opportunities. While their stories are too often marginalized, their resilience stands as a testament to strength in the face of adversity.
TERIA reaffirmed the urgent need for comprehensive legal frameworks to address widow-based violence, discrimination, and economic marginalization. We also called for the strengthening of support systems that empower widow-led families, ensuring they can thrive with dignity and justice.
